Crate diggin...

There's a lot going on. It's crazy how situations have peaks and valleys - one minute I have no new hip hop music, the next, I'm saturated w/more than I can handle.

I previously mentioned something about Bunny Rabbit. Well watch out, she is on a rampage! The unedited version was filled w/profanity and questionable content - potty mouth for sure! The edit version is just that - a bleep-bleep-bleep fest. The disk is called "Lover's and Crypts". I'm not endorsing or denying, just confirming that it exists. It's in my 'need to listen to again' pile.

I still have not gotten all the way through BusDriver's "RoadKillOvercoat". Out of the 12 tracks on the disk, we could only play three tracks on the radio due to profanity and questionable content. But time has permitted an edit on a few tracks. I like the first track "Casting Agent and Cowgirls". It's upbeat w/catchy beats and his lyricism is quick and quirky.

I do like Sentence. Good beats and lyrics. How simple is that. "There and Back" gets on my good side right away w/an intro by DJ Thought. Just a 60 second or so clip w/the dj mixing up a nice and mellow track. I did listen all the way through and settled on "Warning Shots" as a fav.

I'm trying to get my hands on what I've been told are two above average disks, they are Dalek's "Abandoned Language" and X-Clan's "Return from Mecca". X-Clan's rep speaks for itself. They've been off the block, but if they do what they've done in the past, they have a place in my music player. Dalek graces the most recent cover of CMJ, the College Music Journal, and the article gives them much props. But I'd like to hear for myself.

I could go on, but since it seems the dry spell is over, I'll save some for the next time ... stay healthy hip hoppers, kfox

Nas getting some TV love!

I like Nas. I like the body of work that he has put out. Count his latest as a must get - "Hip Hop Is Dead".

Nas performed LIVE on my fav late night talk show last night - David Letterman. Oooh, it was nice. I had expected him to perform "Hip Hop Is Dead" but, that single is over...you should do better at keeping up hip hoppers.

The new single is "Can't Forget About You".

Some HH for BHM!

That's right, during Black History Month - BHM - there must be some television programming to chronicle my fav genre, right? Believe that hip hoppers.

Though the palette is paltry:

Tuesday, February 20: Independent Lens (10:00-11:00 p.m. ET)
"Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes"

This film takes an in-depth look at machismo in rap music and hip-hop culture where creative genius, poetic beauty and madbeats collide with misogyny, violence and homophobia. By Byron Hurt.

Now, go forth and get some of that! And as always, stay true, kfox.

The New-ness

Some new stuff is on my block.

Mos Def
"True Magic"
  • Good stuff; true to his game, but does not venture off and explore much new terrain though I like the title track; it's not like "Danger" and lots of folk did not like that; but can someone tell me what is up w/the packaging on this disc - or the lack of it? Yeah, it was in a clear plastic case w/the disc and that is it...no cover art, no liner notes. The tracks are listed on the disk and that is it; that is so booty ... There should be a discount for that ...
Om: Hip-Hop V. 1
  • What's not like about Om Records? And this project is meaty - Zion I, Colossus, Crown City Rockers ... instead of Om, it should be 'ummmm' (hope that's not too corny ... )

Macromantics
"Moments in Movement

  • The age of the white girl rapper has arrived; but this joint is really nice; there's just a different atmosphere on this; the flow is unpredictable, the beats are strong and on point
Bunny Rabbit
"Lovers and Crypts"
  • This one I have not listened to yet; my copy is supposed to be clean and it damn well better be, because with titles like "Pussy Queen" and "Saddle Up", it'll never get any airplay where I'm at

I finally located my "More Fish" from Ghostface ... that's the one to get.

I'll try to hit on the Grammy's before the week is out ... if you can't wait for the hip hop version, check out my other blog for the overall recap ... I'm out hip hoppers ... do dat &*$#@, kfox

Countdown to the Grammys

I absolutely love watching awards shows. I don't know why, but it is one of the rare occasions when I actually sit down and focus on the telly.

So the Grammy Awards are just days away. My fav band is up for two awards. That would be The Roots, baby! The crew is currently out west touring. They have a pretty nice show lined up for this weekend. If I were out that way, I'd be there - no doubt.

That's it for now ... I know you feenin for more, but I'm saving it for the next round.

stay true ... kfox
